Gertie Exchange is our collaborative programming arm—a platform for bringing artists, galleries, and institutions from outside Chicago into meaningful, mutually invested dialogue with the city.Exchange is not a rental program. It's not a standard gallery partnership. It's something we've designed specifically to solve a problem: Chicago has one of the most vibrant art communities in the world, but it doesn't always have the infrastructure to connect that community with international artists and galleries who want a genuine presence here.We built Gertie Exchange to change that—by creating a model where outside partners don't just show up, but invest: in programming, in dinners, in events that bring their networks to Chicago and Chicago's networks to them.
How does Gertie Exchange work?
Every Gertie Exchange project is a real collaboration. Partners contribute to production costs, programming, and activations. Gertie contributes our space, our audience, our curatorial thinking, and our deep roots in the Chicago community. The result is something neither party could make alone.
We share credit transparently. We share revenue fairly. And we hold each other to the standard we've set: that everything that happens at Gertie —selling or non-selling, in-house or in partnership—should deepen the city's cultural ecosystem, not just add to the noise.
For potential partners
If you're a gallery, institution, or artist looking for a Chicago home base that goes beyond four walls and an opening, we'd love to talk. Gertie Exchange is how we make those conversations into something real.
