About the exhibition

Join CXW for the first installment of the In Conversation with ICI series presented by CXW featuring Faheem Majeed and Monique Brinkman-Hill.

The keystone exhibition for CXW, Over My Head: Encounters with Conceptual Art in a Flyover City, 1984-2015 presents Chicago as a nerve-center for post-conceptual art. One of the goals of the exhibition is to expand our perception and understanding of Chicago’s artistic history by foregrounding the legacies of some of the city’s great historical art dealers, and the artists they championed.

In this same spirit of expanding our knowledge, the presented conversations will aim to both “zoom out” and “zoom in” on the topic at hand. While honoring many of the influential galleries and dealers in the city, we must also zoom out and be aware of the artists that get left out of those systems. What institutions support these artists, and how do these different communities and spaces fit together to create and sustain the larger ecosystem?

As respective former and current Executive Directors of the South Side Community Art Center, Majeed and Brinkman-Hill will discuss the historical role of the Center in supporting the careers of Black artists in Chicago, as well as the evolving role of the Center now and into the future.

This conversation will be moderated by Scott Vincent Campbell, Midwest Programs Manager at ICI.
